Review | Dewytree Urban Shade Cool Calming Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++

In today’s post, I’ll be sharing my review of the Dewytree Urban Shade Cool Calming Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++.

I saw a YouTube video of Director Pi praising this sunscreen and had to try it myself as I wanted a cooling sunscreen to use in the hot weather, so I asked my sister to get it for me and have been using it on and off for over a year now, in rotation with other sunscreens I have in my collection. This summer I used this sun stick whenever I went out and reapplied often. Had I used it every single day it would have finished within a month, but I still have half left as I’m using other sunscreens too.

I briefly mentioned this sunscreen in a recent sunscreen collection post and today I’ll be sharing a more detailed review of my experience using it, but first as usual I’ll share some general information about it.

SPF & PA Rating: SPF50+ PA++++

UV Filters: Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinal A Plus), Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinal T 150), Polysilicone-15 (Parsol SLX), Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S)

Quantity & Packaging: 20g in a small, travel friendly and aesthetically pleasing white twist up tube with a baby blue cover. The compact packaging is so cute and easy to carry around, but I did have a slight issue with the stick falling out the tube once I had used it half way, probably because the edges had loosened over time. I now have to be extra careful whenever I open it so that it doesn’t fall out. It does come with an extra protective cap inside which helps to keep dust away from it so long as it doesn’t completely fall out the main component by mistake.

Scent: A strong natural rosemary scent, that kind of reminds me of Vicks Vaporub but in a good way and doesn’t linger.

Appearance & Whitecast: An opaque light blue cream balm bar that blends into the skin with no white or blue cast on my light-medium skin tone.

Texture & Finish: A creamy balm-like texture with an instant cooling and refreshing feel on the skin upon application that is perfect for hot weather. It leaves a comfortable satin finish on the skin with 1-2 layers but as you apply more layers (needed for adequate sun protection) you can start to feel that typical sun stick greasy slick.

My Experience

The Dewytree Urban Shade Cool Calming Sun Stick is perfection in the hot summer weather! I’ve been looking for a cooling sunscreen that actually makes a difference to my skin for a while now and I can say without a doubt this is the best one I’ve tried.

It glides easily on to the skin and instantly gives a crispy cool icey breeze feeling on the skin and feels like a thin layer of refreshing watery hydration is coating my skin with every swipe. The fantastic thing is that this cooling sensation stays on the skin for quite some time but it’s not irritating or sensitising for me, and also doesn’t sting my eyes, which was a worry of mine.

It gives my skin a healthy dewy finish with a few swipes, but it does start to look and feel a little greasy when I build up the layers for enough sun protection. The greasiness is the same for me with most sun sticks, and thankfully with this one, although it can get greasy, it doesn’t feel heavy on my skin or make me sweat in the heat.

That being said, as I have to apply quite a lot of layers, it does end up clogging my pores a bit and I sometimes get a few whiteheads on my cheeks and upper lip when I use this sun stick. Instead, for my face, I prefer to use a lightweight essence type sunscreen for my main sun protection and just add a few swipes of this sun stick for reapplication throughout the day, that way there isn’t too much of that greasy build up. When it does get greasy, I apply a light dusting of translucent setting powder over it to mattifying overly shiny areas.

Whenever I use this sun stick, or any sunscreen to be fair, double cleansing at the end of the day is essential to prevent the liklihood of breakouts forming.

Another thing to note is when I’ve applied it over makeup and it does end up smudging my base and the sun stick gets grubby. It can be a bit of a hassle having to re-do makeup and clean off the makeup marks from the stick after each application, so now I tend to reach for something else if I’m wearing makeup.

Although I’ve mentioned a few notable issues I have with it on my face such as greasiness, breakouts and makeup smudging, it’s completely different on the rest of my body as my skin is a lot drier there. Applying this sun stick to exposed areas such as my arms, legs, hands and feet is a dream as it moisturises my skin, cools it down and protects it well. The only problem with using it for my body is that the quantity is so small that it would finish quickly so I’d love for it to come in a bigger size some day.

If you have a combination or dry skin type and you like the natural smell of rosemary and want a sunscreen that will hydrate and cool your skin while protecting it from the sun, then you might want to give the Dewytree Urban Shade Cool Calming Sun Stick a try.
