Review | Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++

In today’s post, I’ll be writing about the viral K-Beauty sunscreen Beauty Of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ that I had to get my hands on and have been enjoying just as much as everyone else. The interesting thing is that I heard it isn’t as popular in Korea as it is in other countries and also how it has a similar texture to one that is actually popular in Korea, the Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream, which happens to also be one of my favourites. Now that I’ve tried both I see why some people could think they are similar but I do see and feel a difference, plus they have different added skincare ingredients, so I like them for different reasons and to use in different situations, which I’ll detail later on in my review. I briefly mentioned this Sun Cream in a recent sunscreen collection post I wrote, and today I’ll be sharing a more detailed review of my experience using it, but first as usual I’ll share some general information about it.

Description

Relief Sun is a lightweight and creamy type organic sunscreen that’s comfortable on skin. Even if you apply a large amount several times, it is not sticky and gives a moist finish like that of a light moisturizing cream. Containing 30% rice extract and grain fermented extracts, it provides moisture and nourishment to the skin.

Lightweight cream texture – It is similar to a light moisturizing cream, and it is not sticky or slippery even if you apply it several times. After absorption, it provides a natural glow without a white cast. Even if you apply a large amount before makeup, it does not clump or get cakey.

Rice extract 30% + Grain fermented extracts – Rice and grain fermented extracts are rich in vitamins B, C, E, amino acids, and minerals which help to moisturize dry skin and comfortably calm the skin. Rice has played a very important role as a staple food and skin care ingredient in Korean history. In the Joseon Dynasty, rice bran water was used like the toner of today, and was called Beauty Water, used for beautiful skin. Rice bran is rich in amino acids and minerals, helping to moisturize dry skin.

SPF & PA Protection – SPF and PA tests were completed in labs in both Korea and Spain, and the results are as follows
Korean Lab: SPF 52.5±5.8 / PA UVA PF 16.1±2.4 P++++
Spain Lab: SPF 63.1±0.6 / PA UVA PF 19 P++++

How to use:
At the last step of skin care routine, evenly spread a generous amount over areas vulnerable to sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours.

Quantity & Packaging: 50ml of sunscreen in a minimal aesthetic beige soft squeeze tube with a screw-on cap.

Scent: No artificial fragrance but it does have a very light scent that reminds me of rice.

Appearance & Whitecast: A white cream that blends into the skin with no white cast on my light-medium skin tone.

Texture & Finish: The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics has a lightweight, hydrating and moisturizing lotion texture that has a bit of a thicker body to it as you layer it and work it in. The finish is more on the dewy side. It is very similar or almost identical to the Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream upon application but then ends up with a deeper moisturizing and nourishing finish in comparison.

My Experience

I love rice in my skincare so seeing a rice-based sunscreen was indeed intriguing especially because I adore the skin brightening and nourishing effects of rice and as I have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the rice and probiotics along with the SPF ingredients help to protect my skin and to prevent further damage and discolouration in the long run.

The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics sunscreen is a dream to apply on my combination skin type. It’s lightweight but also has a creaminess to it that really combats any dry areas and leaves my skin with a youthful glow. I apply 2-3 fingers worth all over my face, neck and ears, and while applying it, it first seems like there might be a bit of a white cast but like most chemical sunscreens it ends up blending in really well and not leaving any visible white residue. Also, being a chemical sunscreen, it does sting when close to the eyes so that’s something to be aware of.

It’s one of those sunscreens that I can apply both under makeup and on its own without needing to apply a separate moisturiser first. This is very similar to my other favourite, the Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream, but as I mentioned earlier that one is a bit more lightweight than the Beauty of Joseon which in comparison has a deeper level of moisturization, so on days when my skin is feeling drier than usual I would opt for Beauty of Joseon whereas on regular days when I don’t need as much of a nourishing feel I’d opt for the Round Lab one. Both are in my top 10 sunscreens, but if I really had to choose one over the other I like the Round Lab one a bit more partly because of how lightweight and semi-natural of a finish it has and partly because of the cuter packaging, but this Beauty of Joseon one is still great and I do see myself repurchasing it.

Although the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics is more moisturizing it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy, but leaves a pleasant dewy glow that I like, and also hasn’t caused any clogged pores or breakouts which is great.

For reference, my combination skin enjoys this sunscreen but some people with oilier skin might not enjoy the nourishing glowy finish as much so I think it’s more for combination and dry skin types, whereas I’d guide people with oily skin who still want a hydrating but more lightweight feel in the direction of Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream if choosing between the two.
